Games Invade the “Real World”

Just as the last Christmas Day proved to be the very day when more tablet/smartphone activations took place in 2012, the last holiday season also revealed a new trend that is evidently happening in the gaming industry, with more and more game titles rolling out “real world” variants that are made for kids.

There’s Angry Birds for example, which had rolled out two popular game-sets in Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Knock on Woods, which essentially came with their own slingshots, allowing children to play Angry Birds “in real life.”

Apart from the two, the “real world” variants of Angry Birds Star Wars had also made quite a lot waves, just as its digital-game version did in different app consensus and ratings bodies.

The most popular of Angry Birds Star Wars-derived toys would be that of Angry Birds Star Wars Jenga Death Star Game, a toy-game set which included cute toys which children would certainly love to play with.

Apart from Angry Birds, Temple Run also had its own “real world” variant in the Temple Run Card Came, just as the popular game Where’s My Water also had its own “real world” variation.

It can be said that the “real world” variants of popular game titles are borne from the principle of monetizing through merchandising, but a non-cynical view towards how items are being marketed today would show that they stand as efforts in “veering” children away from being too device or gadget dependent.

Parents who are concerned about how their kids are glued to iPads and iPhones may find the new “real world” variants of popular iOS games as a sign of good news, as a means of tapering off their children’s dependency on electronic goods and products.
