Believe it or not the iPod is now 10 years old, it was like this time that Steve Jobs went on stage to announce a new device that would change listening to music forever, and yes it was the iPod. You can see this in the video below.
The iPod, the portable music player has been responsible for Apple’s dramatic comeback over the past decade. It was the first device that let Apple down the path of consumer electronics, although Apple is now dominated by the iPhone and the iPad, the iPod still remains one its main devices.
Macworld told a nice story telling us of the iPod origin:
Behind every successful product lies a problem in search of a solution. The inspirational problem, in the iPod’s case, involved the pitiful state of the young MP3 player market in the late 1990s.
Portable MP3 players had been around since the mid 1990s, but Apple found that every one on the market offered a lackluster user experience. Steve Jobs had a strong term for gadgets like that: “crap”. Everyone at Apple agreed.
We remember that when the iPod was first announced not everyone fell in love with it straight away, as there were a lot of negative comments around the iPod. This lead to a lot of doubts that this device would succeed at all. However 10 years later the iPod has sold over 304 million units and has now not one design but many many design that fit for every taste. The iPod has now become the way to listen to music and very rarely would you find someone who does not like the iPod.
Happy Birthday iPod!
